TRAINING
An experienced operator supervises with an emphasis on comprehension and accuracy. It typically takes up to 6 weeks before a new operator starts to become efficient.
You do not think about driving, you just do it. Having the steps to take and who to call laid out in detail, make it easier. You have undoubtedly heard about life threatening situations where the people in trouble said afterward how much the calm person on the phone helped.
We try to match the job to what our operators like. Some people like graveyard, thank God.
We have the same problem as a restaurant. We have three busy periods: mornings from 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM, lunch from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and evenings from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. If we could hire people to work three shifts totaling nine hours, it would be great for us. We have found that there is a surprisingly good pool of experienced operators to draw from in Chico.
We try to take care of our employees. There can be hours of boredom pierced by someone's pain. If someone works a split shift, we pay them an extra hour. We think incentives work better than a sharp tongue. Leading by example is better than pushing. Having a happy place to work is a necessity.
We have employees who have been with us from when we started in 2003.
